- Location: Khustain Nuruu National Park is located in the Tov Province of Mongolia, approximately 100 kilometers southwest of the capital city, Ulaanbaatar.
- Significance: The park is renowned for its successful reintroduction of the Przewalski’s horse, also known as the takhi or Mongolian wild horse. The Przewalski’s horse is considered the only true wild horse species still in existence. The park was established in 1993 to preserve the unique biodiversity of the area.
- Wildlife: Besides the Przewalski’s horse, Khustain Nuruu is home to various other species of wildlife, including red deer, marmots, gazelles, and a variety of bird species. The park’s diverse landscapes, including mountains, steppe, and river valleys, contribute to its ecological richness.

In the morning, we pick up at your hotel in Ulaanbaatar and drive out of the city for two hours to Khustai National Park. We will then make our way to the Khustai Ger Camp, operated by the Khustai Trust, on the northern borderline of the Khustai. We have lunch at the Khustai Ger Camp.
In the afternoon, we drive to the remarkable Neolithic graves of Öngut, dating from the 6th or 7th century A.D. We will thereafter make our way to the Tuul River and its willows for some birding. Red-footed falcons are relatively easy to see here. In the evening we will take a game drive with a high probability of seeing some of the free roaming herds of Takhi. During the day they usually stay high in the mountains and are rather difficult to see, whereas very early and late in the day they usually come down into the valleys for water and to graze. Overnight in gers.
Today we will trek through the varied habitats of Khustai National Park. Starting out from the ger camp we will hike the ridges with views over the distant Moltsog Sands as well as the partly forested Khustai Mountains. We will trek up a gully to incredible look-out points with a reasonable chance of seeing red deer, black vultures and numerous other raptors such as eagles and falcons. We will reach the back country camp at Moilt, which consists of simple houses. These have recently been somewhat refurbished to provide basic accommodation. The camp is located in an excellent spot next to the core area and is well suited for wildlife viewing on foot in the late evening. Transfer back to camp by vehicle and overnight in gers.
In the evening we return to Ulaanbaatar.
